The Jordaan is one of the oldest and most charming neighbourhoods of Amsterdam. Originally a working class district, the Jordaan has become one of the most expensive, up scale locations in the Netherlands whilst simultaneously preserving its distinctive character and historical architecture. Marnixkade largely forms the eastern shore of the northern part of the Singelgracht and was built on a hill which was part of the ramparts. In the second half of the 19th century, the city of Amsterdam under pressure from the huge demand for housing and urban facilities, had to build in these green lands.
